If your child wants to learn an instrument, the Lower North Shore has plenty of music schools and studios, mostly around Chatswood and Crows Nest. We list ten, plus one language event for families. This guide shows where they are and how to choose.
Where the music schools are
Chatswood has five listed: M Piano Studio, Arpeggio Music Studio, Con Brio School of Music, Fantasia Music School and Archadenia Music Academy. Crows Nest has three: Big Music School and Studios, Jazz Workshop Australia and Music Within. Group Melody School of Music is in Pacific Place, and North Shore Piano Studio is in Spit Junction.
Some names suggest a focus, such as piano at M Piano Studio and North Shore Piano Studio, and jazz at Jazz Workshop Australia. We don't have the instruments each school teaches, so check their own pages.
A language event
French classes for your kids and you are listed in Artarmon. This is a language event rather than a music one, but it may suit families who like learning together. We don't have times or costs, so check with the organiser.
What we don't know yet
We don't have lesson prices, ages, class formats or trial offers for these schools, and no music events with set times are listed. We won't guess.
Questions to ask:
- Which instruments do you teach, and from what age?
- Are lessons one-to-one or in a group?
- Can we have a trial lesson first?
- Do we need to buy or hire an instrument, and what do you recommend?
- Is there a concert or exam path, and is it optional?
Choosing lessons
A studio near home or school makes weekly practice easier to keep up. Families in Chatswood, Willoughby and Artarmon have the largest choice. Those in Crows Nest, Cammeray and North Sydney can start with the three Crows Nest options, and Mosman families can look at North Shore Piano Studio in Spit Junction.
Try to match the teaching style to your child. Some children love a group class where music is played together. Others do better one-to-one. For young beginners, ask about taster sessions. Plan for short, regular practice at home, as this helps more than a long session now and then.
Keeping up with what's new
We're still adding music lessons and events on the Lower North Shore. New listings will show in the events and clubs below. For the latest, check the organisers' own pages.
