Ryde and Hunters Hill have a good mix of places for children to learn outside school: libraries, a museum, community language schools and a storytime. We list ten classes and learning providers and one event. This guide shows what is listed and how to get the details.

Libraries and a storytime

Four libraries are listed: Eastwood Library, Gladesville Library, North Ryde Library and West Ryde Library. A Storytime session in Hunters Hill is also listed as an event. Storytimes are a calm way to introduce young children to books and to other families. We don't have the times or ages for each library, so check with them directly.

A museum and the council

The NSW Schoolhouse Museum of Public Education in North Ryde is listed, and may interest children who like history and finding out how schools used to work. Ryde City Council in North Ryde is also listed. It is worth looking at the council's page for programs for children.

Community language schools

Several language options appear: Eastwood Tamil Study Centre in Eastwood, Mandarin Study in Denistone East, Ryde Persian School in Ryde and Jaliyati Inc Community Arabic School in Putney. These may suit families who want children to learn or keep up a home language. We don't have class times, ages or fees, so contact each school.

What we don't know yet

No STEM classes with set times are listed for the area at the moment. Libraries sometimes run coding or science sessions, so ask at your local branch.

Questions to ask:

  • What ages is it for, and is booking needed?
  • Does it run in term time, school holidays or both?
  • Is there a cost?

Planning your week

Pick the place closest to home or school. Eastwood and Denistone families have Eastwood Library and the Mandarin option nearby, while West Ryde, Gladesville and North Ryde each have a library. Putney has the Arabic school, and Hunters Hill has the storytime.

For younger children, a short library visit with a story and a few books to take home is plenty. Older children may like a weekly language class with a friend.

Keeping up with what's new

We're still adding classes, STEM sessions and events around Ryde and Hunters Hill. New listings will show in the events and clubs below. For the latest, check the organisers' own pages.
