Diwali: things to do with kids

See what's on

Privacy notice

Draft for the pilot. An Australian solicitor still needs to review this before launch.

What we keep

  • Your email address, and your name if you give it or sign in with Google or Facebook.
  • Your kids' ages in years, if you add them. Never names, birthdays or photos.
  • Your star ratings and the preset tags you pick, and an optional private note to our team. Ratings are only ever shown as an average, never with your name, and the private note is never shown to anyone outside Roolu.
  • Your suburb (rounded to about 1 km) and how far you will travel.
  • The interests you pick, and what you save and click, to put the right activities first.
  • How you want to hear from us (weekend and holiday heads-ups, offers from providers).

What we don't do

  • We don't collect anything about children other than an age.
  • When you open a map view, your browser loads map tiles from OpenFreeMap (built on OpenStreetMap data), which can see your IP address like any website you visit. Pages without a map never contact them, and we send them nothing about you.
  • We don't send your details to the providers. When you open a provider's booking page, the link carries no information about you or your kids.
  • Sponsored activities are always labelled, and they only reach parents whose answers suit them. Providers never see who you are.

Your choices

You can change your answers, switch notifications off, or delete your account in Profile at any time. Deleting removes your kids' ages, interests, saved activities and settings.

Emails and phone alerts

  • We email you a sign-in link when you ask for one, and one welcome email when you finish setting up your account. That is all you get unless you turn more on.
  • Heads-ups about things on near you (weekends and school holidays) are only sent if you choose them. Every one has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can also switch them off in Profile. We send no more than one a day and three a week.
  • The newsletter is a separate sign-up. We only email an address after its owner gives consent by clicking a confirmation link, and every newsletter has an unsubscribe link.
  • Phone alerts need you to install Roolu on your phone and tap Turn on phone alerts. We store the address your phone's browser gives us to reach it, and nothing else about the phone. Turn them off in Profile at any time.
  • Offers from local providers are a separate choice again, and are always labelled Sponsored.

Who we share information with

We use service providers to run the service, and we share only what each one needs with them: hosting (Vercel), our database (Neon), sending email (Resend, whose sending servers are in Japan), and Google or Facebook only if you choose to sign in with them. Maps use OpenFreeMap as described above. Some of these services process information outside Australia. They only get what they need to do their job.

Businesses we list

Some listings are created from open data such as OpenStreetMap contributors, so that families can find local places. They carry the business name, its place on the map and its own website if it has one, and nothing personal. If it is your business, you can claim the listing to correct it, or ask us to remove it by emailing hello@roolu.com.au.

Your rights and who to ask

We aim to handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, and to send email in line with the Spam Act 2003. You can ask to see or correct what we hold, or ask us to delete it, by emailing hello@roolu.com.au (or use Delete my account in Profile). If you're not happy with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

Counting visits

We count page views and clicks to providers without tying them to you, so providers can see how their listing is doing. We also count, with no cookies and nothing that identifies you, which kinds of activity, suburbs and search words people look at, so Roolu can show what local families want and when. Search words that look like an email address or phone number are never kept.

We also use Google Analytics, which sets cookies in your browser and sends Google anonymous details about the pages you view, so we can see which pages help families most. We switch off Google's ad features, so it is not used to show you ads. You can stop it by blocking cookies or trackers in your browser, or by installing Google's opt-out add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout).
