The Upper North Shore has plenty of places for children to learn outside school, from libraries to a rural museum and a house museum. We list ten classes and learning providers and two events. This guide shows what is listed and how to find the details.
Events in Hornsby
Two events are listed in Hornsby: Diwali storytime and a Tuesday Chill Zone. We don't have the times or age ranges, so check the organiser's page. Storytimes suit young children, and a drop-in session like Chill Zone may suit older kids who like a relaxed place to go after school.
Libraries across the area
Six libraries are listed: Hornsby Central Library (which shares a building with Hornsby Shire Council Customer Service), St Ives Library, Gordon Library, Lindfield Library, Turramurra Library and Berowra Branch Library. Libraries are a good start for families, as they have children's books and often run sessions. We don't have each branch's program, so ask them directly.
Middle Dural Toy Library in Galston is also listed. Toy libraries let families borrow toys, which is helpful for younger children who move through toys quickly.
Museums and language
Rose Seidler House in North Wahroonga and Fagan Park Rural Museum in Galston are listed, and may suit curious children who like to see how people lived. French a la Carte in St Ives is listed too, for families who want to try French. We don't have times, ages or costs for these, so check each organiser's page.
What we don't know yet
No STEM classes with set times are listed for the area at the moment. Libraries sometimes run coding or science sessions, so ask at your local branch.
Questions to ask:
- What ages is it for, and is booking needed?
- Does it run in term time, school holidays or both?
- Is there a cost?
Planning your week
Pick the place nearest home or school. Families in Gordon, Lindfield and Turramurra each have a library in their suburb, and St Ives has a library and a French option. Hornsby and Berowra have their own libraries, and Galston has the toy library and the rural museum.
For a day out, combine a library visit with a museum stop if both are nearby.
Keeping up with what's new
We're still adding classes, STEM sessions and events on the Upper North Shore. New listings will show in the events and clubs below. For the latest, check the organisers' own pages.
