Learning outside school doesn't have to mean a paid course. On the Northern Beaches, many of the places we list for classes and learning are libraries, plus a Japanese language school. This guide shows what is listed and how to find out what each one offers for children.

Libraries across the area

We list nine libraries: Dee Why Library, Manly Library, Warringah Mall Library in Brookvale, Avalon Community Library in Avalon Beach, Balgowlah Seaforth Library in Seaforth, Glen Street Library and Belrose Library (both listed under Seaview Rise Estate), Forestville Library and Terrey Hills Community Library.

Libraries are a good starting point for families. Many run children's sessions, and they are a calm place to borrow books and find out what is on locally. We don't have the programs, times or ages for each branch, so check with the library directly to see what it runs for children right now.

A language school

Forest Japanese School in Belrose is also listed. It may suit families who want their child to learn Japanese or keep the language going. We don't have its class times, age ranges or fees, so contact the school to ask.

What we don't know yet

No STEM classes, workshops or events with set times are listed for the area at the moment. We would rather be upfront about that than pad this guide. If you want coding, robotics or science sessions, search the libraries' own pages and local council pages, which sometimes advertise them.

Questions to ask any provider:

  • Which ages is the session for?
  • Is booking needed, and is there a cost?
  • Does it run in term time, school holidays or both?

Planning around your week

Choose a library near home or school and make it a regular visit. Families in Brookvale and Dee Why have two or more close by, while those in Avalon Beach, Terrey Hills and Forestville each have a branch nearer to them. Take a look at the children's section first. You can often pick up flyers for local activities there too.

For younger children, a short visit with a story or a puzzle can be enough. Older children may like a project they can come back to each week.

Keeping up with what's new

We're still adding classes, STEM sessions and events across the Northern Beaches. New listings will show in the events and clubs below. For the latest, check the organisers' own pages.

Built from Roolu's local listings. Dates, prices and ages can change, so check with each organiser before you go.
