Sport for kids on the Upper North Shore is led by martial arts and gymnastics. We have 10 places listed: seven martial arts schools, two gym sports clubs and The Y at St Ives. We have no one-off sport events or classes listed for the area right now, so this guide is about places you can contact and join.
Where the listed places are
- Hornsby: Black Belt Martial Arts, Gracie Barra Hornsby and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Hornsby.
- Pymble: GKR Karate and Gracie Barra Pymble.
- Asquith: Icon Gymsports and SKM Martial Arts.
- Wahroonga: Le Ray Gymnastics Abbotsleigh.
- Pennant Hills: Evolution Martial Arts.
- St Ives: The Y NSW St Ives.
Martial arts
Seven of the ten are martial arts schools, so there is plenty of choice if your child likes that kind of training. Karate, jiu jitsu and general martial arts schools are all on the list. Because schools differ, it helps to ask a few things before you pick one:
- Which age groups do they take, and are children taught in their own class?
- Can your child try a session first?
- What should they wear, and is there a grading or belt system you need to know about?
Gymnastics and general sport
Icon Gymsports in Asquith and Le Ray Gymnastics Abbotsleigh in Wahroonga are the two gym sports options. Ask each about the age groups and class levels they offer, because we don't hold those details.
The Y NSW St Ives is the other listed place. We know its name and suburb but not the programs it runs for children, so ask what sport and fitness options it has for your child's age.
Planning the week
- Contact the school or club first. We don't have prices, ages or session times for these places, so ask before you travel.
- Hornsby has three listed martial arts schools, so if you live nearby you can compare a couple before you choose.
- The places run from Hornsby and Asquith to Pymble and St Ives, so check how far each one is from home or school before you commit to a weekly trip.
- Ask about a waiting list, because popular classes can fill.
More on the way
We're still adding sport classes and events across the Upper North Shore, including team sports. The events and clubs below are what we have today. For the latest details on ages, costs and times, check each organiser's own page.
