On a wet day in the Eastern Suburbs, four things on our list look suited to staying dry: an artist's drop-in workshop in Double Bay, French classes in Paddington, a comics and games day in Bondi Junction and The Sorcerer's Apprentice in Randwick. We have eight events listed for the area, but we've left out the ones held in parks and any we can't tell are suitable for a wet day. Check the venue before you leave, because we don't hold the exact room or whether every part is indoors.

Indoor ideas on our list

  • Drop-in workshop with artist Samuel Chan (Double Bay): a creative option for kids who like making things. Ask the organiser about ages and whether you need to book.
  • French classes for your kids and you (Paddington): the title says the class is for children and a parent together. Ask about the age range and whether it is a one-off or a course.
  • Wave Con: Comics and Games Day (Bondi Junction): a day for kids who like comics and games. Check the organiser's page for what is on and who it suits.
  • The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Randwick): we have the name and suburb only, so check the organiser's page for the age range and the venue.

Making a wet day work

  • Decide in the morning. If the rain sets in, you can still get to something booked or drop-in.
  • Pick one main thing and leave time for a snack and a rest afterwards. Little ones get tired quickly when everything is crowded and indoors.
  • Pack a towel and a spare set of clothes for the walk from the car or bus, plus a bag for wet shoes.
  • Ask the organiser whether there is a coat rack or a place to leave a pram.
  • Have a plan B at home, such as a favourite game or a craft box, in case an event is full or cancelled for the weather.

Ideas by age

  • Toddlers and preschoolers: ask the organisers whether the workshop and the French classes suit your child's age, because the listings don't say.
  • Primary-age children: the workshop and the comics and games day are the two to check first.
  • Older kids: the comics and games day may suit them, but check the age range first.
