Learning for kids in Sydney City and the Inner South is mostly about libraries and museums. We have 8 library events and 10 places to visit: five museums, three libraries, a historic house and Madame Tussauds Sydney. We have no STEM classes listed yet, so this guide covers what we do have.

Library sessions for little ones

  • Rhymetime, ages 0 to 2: Darling Square Library in Haymarket, Surry Hills Library, Glebe Library and Green Square Library in Zetland.
  • Storytime, ages 3 to 5: Darling Square and Surry Hills.
  • Bilingual storytime, ages 3 to 5: Darling Square Library.
  • Discover Our Community Book Exchange, in Pyrmont.

Ask each library about days, times and whether you need to book. We don't hold whether a cost applies.

Museums, libraries and houses to visit

  • Museums: the Australian Museum, the Australian National Maritime Museum, the Chau Chak Wing Museum, the Justice and Police Museum and the Museum of Sydney.
  • Libraries: Customs House Library, Glebe Library and Green Square Library.
  • A historic house: Elizabeth Bay House.
  • Also listed: Madame Tussauds Sydney.

We don't have ages, prices or kids' programs for these places. Check each one's page for family activities and opening hours.

Choosing by age

  • Babies and toddlers: rhymetime is listed for ages 0 to 2.
  • Preschoolers: storytime and bilingual storytime are listed for ages 3 to 5.
  • Primary-age children: a museum or library visit can work well. Ask what each offers for school-age children.

Planning the day

  • Pick one place and keep the visit short. Small children tire faster than you think.
  • Check opening hours and whether a booking is needed.
  • Pack water and snacks, and ask where you can eat.
  • Some of these places are close to each other, such as the three in Quay Quarter, so you can plan a short walk between two, but keep the day light.
  • Let your child choose what to look at. That keeps them interested.

More on the way

We're still adding classes, STEM sessions and events across the inner city. The events and clubs below are what we have today. For the latest details, check each organiser's own page.

Built from Roolu's local listings. Dates, prices and ages can change, so check with each organiser before you go.
