Dance for kids in Sydney City and the Inner South: we have 10 dance studios listed, plus 7 ballet and jazz classes for ages 1.5 to 8 in Pyrmont, Glebe and The Rocks. A Cirque du Soleil show at Moore Park is also on the list, which is one to watch rather than join in.

Classes by age

  • Ages 1.5 to 3: Ballet class Dance with Me, in Pyrmont and Glebe.
  • Ages 3 to 5: Little Ballet, in Pyrmont and Glebe.
  • Ages 3 to 8: a jazz class in Pyrmont.
  • Ages 5 to 8: ballet classes and a Junior Jazz class in The Rocks.

The listings don't say what a term costs, so check each organiser's page for times, prices and booking.

Studios

These are the studios on our list, with the suburb we have for each.

  • Chinatown: Crossover Dance Studios.
  • Koreatown: Dancekool.
  • Eveleigh: Danceworks Sydney.
  • Quay Quarter: William Maslin Dance Studios.
  • Dawes Point: Sydney Dance Company.
  • Moore Park: Academy Ballet.
  • Redfern: Dance & Arts Studio.
  • Erskineville: Dance Star.
  • Chippendale: Studio 17 Performing Arts.
  • Beaconsfield: Village Nation.

We don't hold ages or styles for the studios, so ask each what it teaches for children.

Choosing a first class

  • Toddlers aged 1.5 to 3: start with Dance with Me. Ask whether a parent joins in.
  • Preschoolers aged 3 to 5: Little Ballet is listed for this age.
  • Ages 5 to 8: the ballet and Junior Jazz classes in The Rocks fit this range.
  • Older children: ask the studios which styles and levels they offer.

Planning the week

  • Ask whether your child can try one class first.
  • Find out what to wear, since many classes ask for specific shoes or clothes.
  • Check the studio's term dates and how it handles missed classes.
  • Choose a place close to home, school or work, so the trip does not become a chore.
  • Watching a show, such as the Cirque du Soleil one, can be a good way to see if your child enjoys movement and performance before you commit to classes.

More on the way

We're still adding dance classes and events across the inner city. The events and clubs below are what we have today. For the latest details, check each organiser's own page.
