Liverpool has a good run of library-based activities for children, from playgroups for the little ones to chess and reading for older kids. This guide shows what is listed so you can plan the school holidays.
The Summer school holidays run from 18 Dec 2026 to 27 Jan 2027 (starting in 7 weeks). These are NSW public-school dates, and Catholic and independent schools can differ, so check your own school's calendar.
Activities by age
The listings give ages for some sessions, which helps when you are sorting out who can go to what.
- Multicultural Playgroups are listed for ages 0 to 5.
- Special story times are listed for ages 3 to 5.
- Reading Buddies is listed for ages 7 to 12.
- Youth Chess is run through Liverpool City Library at Yellamundie, and we don't have an age range for it, so ask the library.
Saturday Storytime and Music and Storytime at Ed. Square are also listed. We haven't been given ages for those two, so check with the organiser before you go.
Liverpool City Library
Liverpool City Library is listed as a club and venue, and it is the natural place to start. Staff can tell you which sessions run during the holidays, which ones need a booking and whether a session has changed since we listed it. The events below show the latest listings, but the library has the final word on days and times.
Ideas for planning the break
- Mix ages. If you have a toddler and an older child, a playgroup in the morning and a reading or chess session on another day can keep everyone busy.
- Book early where you can. Some sessions have limited places, and only the organiser can confirm.
- Plan around a weekend. Saturday Storytime is a handy option when school-day plans fall through, but check that it runs during the holidays.
- Pack for the day. Bring snacks and water, and check the travel and parking before you go.
- Leave a free day. Kids often enjoy a rest at home as much as an outing.
Still adding more
The holiday listings for Liverpool are mostly library programs so far, and we're still adding other kinds of activity such as sport, swimming and creative classes. If you run something for kids in the area, let us know. For the latest dates and bookings, go to each organiser's own page, linked in the listings below.
