Penrith and the Nepean have plenty of ways to get kids outside, from fishing and nature walks to animals and a day at an orchard. This guide covers the outdoor options we hold for the area, with tips on planning each one.
What is listed
We hold one outdoor event and seven clubs and venues. Because each organiser sets its own ages, prices and times, we don't give those here. Check with them before you go.
- Community Fishing in Penrith is the one listed event.
- Windsor Downs Nature Reserve in Llandilo is a place to see bush and wildlife.
- Marchant's Orchard in Mulgoa is a farm-style outing.
- White Water Rafting Penrith in Cranebrook is the water adventure on the list.
- Greener Pastures Equitation Centre in Castlereagh is listed for horse-related activities.
- RDA NSW in Leonay is also listed. Ask them what they offer and who it is for.
- All Fish 2U Aquarium in Kingswood and Oceanarium Aquarium in Werrington are two aquarium visits.
Ideas by interest
- Kids who like animals: the equitation centre and the two aquariums are the places to start. Ask each about visiting hours and whether kids can take part or only watch.
- Kids who like the water: Community Fishing and White Water Rafting Penrith are both listed. For rafting, ask about age and safety rules, and for fishing ask what you need to bring.
- Kids who like nature: Windsor Downs Nature Reserve and Marchant's Orchard are the more relaxed options. Ask the organiser about walking distances, if you have a pram or little legs.
Getting there
The listings are spread across Penrith, Kingswood, Werrington, Leonay, Mulgoa, Llandilo, Cranebrook and Castlereagh. Mulgoa, Llandilo and Castlereagh are on the edge of the area, so plan the drive and check parking and facilities before you leave.
Planning the day
- Confirm opening times, ages and booking with the organiser.
- Pack water, hats, sunscreen and a change of clothes for water activities.
- Wear sturdy shoes for reserves and farms.
- Check the weather. Outdoor sessions can change or be called off when it turns bad.
- Pair a short outing with a picnic so you aren't rushing.
Keep checking
We are still adding outdoor classes and events for Penrith and the Nepean, so more may appear over time. For the latest details, go to each organiser's own page or contact them directly.
