Dance for kids in the Inner West is easy to find, and the choice of style is wide. Roolu lists ten clubs, six classes and one musical event across the area, from Ashfield to Balmain East. Here is how they sort out.
Classes by style
- Lyrical and jazz: Junior Lyrical / Jazz in Newtown.
- K-pop: Kpop Kids and Kpop Teens, both in Ashfield.
- Beginner and little-mover classes in Marrickville: READY SET DANCE Level 1, READY SET DANCE and JAM BUDDIES.
We have not been given ages, timetables or prices for these, so ask each studio about levels and trial classes.
Studios and clubs by suburb
- Ashfield: L'Academie and Sugarplums Dance, and Beats 905 Performing Arts.
- Dulwich Hill: CDC Studios.
- St Peters: Dance Domain.
- Marrickville: Triple Menace.
- Newtown: Danceworks Sydney and Sydney Flamenco Studio.
- Balmain East: The Golden Era Dance Studio and Plié.
- Rozelle: Rozelle School of Visual Arts, which is listed under dance.
If your child is curious about something different, Sydney Flamenco Studio is the one listed with a single, specific style.
Something to watch
The Addams Family, the musical, in Leichhardt is listed as an event. It is a show to see rather than a class, so check the organiser for session times and whether it suits your child's age.
Choosing a studio
- Ask for a trial class, and ask about age groups and levels.
- Check how far the studio is from home or school. Ashfield has three listings, Newtown has three and Marrickville has four, so those suburbs have the most choice.
- Ask what kids wear and whether there is an end-of-year show or performance, if that matters to you.
- Siblings of different ages may be able to dance at the same studio. Ask about timetables.
A child who hasn't danced before often does best with a beginner class and a short trial before you sign up to anything longer. The organisers' own pages have the latest details, and we're still adding studios across the Inner West.
