Perth's jacarandas usually flower from mid-October to late November, which gives families a good run of weeks to plan an outing. Here are the places named for jacarandas, from Applecross to the CBD, so you can pick one that fits your day.

Applecross

  • Nisbet Road, Tain Street and Ardross Street are all named for jacarandas, so you can see all three in one visit.
  • The Rotary Jacaranda Festival is held in Applecross during the season. We do not hold its dates, so check with the organiser before you plan around it.

If you have a whole weekend morning free, Applecross is the obvious choice: several streets and a festival in one trip. Streets like these are often quiet, but keep little ones on the footpath and park considerately, so the neighbours stay happy about the visitors. Finish with an ice cream or a drink nearby, and let the kids tell you which tree was their favourite.

North Perth and Subiaco

  • Leake Street, North Perth.
  • Old Jacaranda Way, Subiaco.

These are good for a quick walk after school, when you only have an hour and want to fit the blossoms in before dinner.

In the CBD

  • Mount Street, Perth CBD.

If you are in the city for another reason, this is an easy extra. Pair it with whatever else is on your list.

Keeping the kids happy

Perth's spring days warm up quickly, so hats and a drink bottle for each child make the walk more enjoyable. Shade is your friend: a picnic rug under a tree gives everyone a break from the sun.

Make a game of it. Ask the children to find the deepest purple, or the flower that has fallen the furthest from its tree. A pencil and a scrap of paper let them draw what they see.

The trees do not all flower at once. If one street is bare, another may be at its peak, so try more than one if you can.

Opening times, road closures and festival details can change, so check the council's site or the festival's own page before you go.
